Marble disks known as oscilla decorated the peristyles of Roman villas. Most were carved on both sides with images related to the world of Dionysus and were designed to hang freely between the columns that surrounded interior gardens.

Both faces of the akroterion are carved. The front is decorated in relief with a double palmette, its stems rising in the form of spiral tendrils from a bed of acanthus leaves; the flower at the top once had a painted stem. A similar decoration on the back was left unfinished.

The monument was presumably erected in memory of the young long-haired girl who clasps her father's hand while her seated mother presents a bird to her little sister.
